Protect Your Jewelry for as Long as You Both Shall Live

I’m reaching the age now where all of my friends are starting to settle down and get married. I think it's nice that people can find someone that they would like to spend the rest of their life with.

Along with the promise to love, honor, and obey, newlyweds will also (hopefully) enjoy a lifetime of lavish gifts including necklaces, earrings, and other such jewelry. While wedding rings will forever be worn around your finger, you are going to need a place to store your jewelry collection. A jewelry box would be the obvious and most elegant choice.

Go Green.. With Cookware!

While it might be too late to capitalize on a theme to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, there is still a way to incorporate green into your interior décor with the arrival of spring right around the corner! Often suggesting multiple meanings in our current society, today’s green theme will in fact revolve around the color rather than its eco-friendly attribute in order to honor the luck of the Irish.

The color green often signifies growth, renewal & health. Sometimes subtle and sometimes vibrant, green can certainly make its mark in any environment. Exuding soothing feelings, green also boasts characteristics similar to those of the color blue including the notion of faster time movement. Thus, a kitchen is often an area focused around a central theme of green in order to inspire residential & commercial cooks alike to work quickly.
Vert collection by Emile HenryEmile Henry's Vert collection boasts a plethora of finely crafted green cookware pieces including appetizer dishes, roasting dishes, soup bowls & ramekins. Start early this year and be prepared to go green this spring – indoors & out!

Create your own 5-Star Backyard

If you’re anything like me, then you’re already thinking about the summer. Sitting poolside, basking in the sun, sipping a drink with an umbrella in it; I can’t think of anything more relaxing. Growing up, I never really experienced too many of the finer things. I never traveled to any exotic islands or fancy beach hotels. Now that I have my own house and my own pool, you can be sure that I’ll take any chance I can to make my backyard feel like a tropical paradise.

Bamboo Bar
The first thing I did was invest in a bamboo outdoor bar. This pub set is made completely out of bamboo and even has a thatched roof! Whenever I host a pool party, it is always the first thing that people notice. Pair the bar with some lounge chairs and my backyard could pass for a 5-star beach resort any day of the week. Maybe I’m just trying to make up for my modest upbringing, but I think I’ve earned a little taste of the finer things in life.

Kartell's Ghost Chair: Sleek & Spooky

Liven up your décor with this unique collection from Kartell created by legendary designer, Philippe Starck. Made with transparent or batch-dyed polycarbonate, Kartell’s elegant Ghost Collection is shock & scratch resistant. Moreover, it boasts resilience against even the most challenging outdoor elements. Though Starck’s versatile creation is known for its delicate, ethereal appearance, do not be fooled by the superior durability and comfort offered by the Ghost Chair.
Ghost Chair by Kartell & Philippe StarckRecently touted in St. Louis’ AT HOME magazine, these see-through seats will easily make a powerful statement within your home. Supporting the notion that classic work never dies, Starck brilliantly reinvents the prominent Louis XVI armchair with a magnificent, modern twist. Fitting for kitchen, dining & living room settings, Kartell’s Ghost Chairs make an especially bold statement in smaller sized rooms. Like round area rugs, the softer, curvier edges on the chair combined with its clear construction allow it to present the illusion of a larger room by softening otherwise harsh corner angles. In addition to its traditionally modern look, and like all Kartell products, the Ghost Chair is environmentally friendly.

An End to Airborne Annoyance

I think that it is safe to assume that almost everyone is looking forward to the coming spring and summer. Snow can be fun for a short while, but by this time every year, I know I have had about enough of the cold for one year. March is a tricky month. One minute you can be enjoying the warm spring air and then the next you find yourself digging your car out of a 3 foot snow bank. But try as it might, the winter is on its way out and spring is slowly but surely making its presence known.

The coming spring will mark the return of many of our favorite things. The dull grey will transform back to a vibrant assortment of greens, the sounds of snow plows will be replaced by the chirping birds, and a warm spring breeze will be playing the part of the harsh winter wind.

But alas, while we welcome most of these changes with open arms, there is one that we could all surely do without: The Mosquito. Known for his annoying buzz and unmistakably itchy bite, since the dawn of time, the mosquito has done everything in its power to ruin any outdoor gathering it sets its sights on.

My home happens to have been built next to a river. While the rushing water can be soothing at times, the amount of mosquitoes that emerge from the brook every year is like something out of a horror movie.
Mosquito Catcher
After years of spending my money on lemon-scented candles and obnoxious bug zappers, I finally decided to try a different and more modern approach. I invested in a propane insect catcher. While I was skeptical at first, there is no denying that these units are the only machines capable of seriously reducing the number of insects in your yard. I assumed it may cut the mosquito population down by 25-50% or so. But I was shocked to find that there were barely any bugs left at all! Sure I was bitten once or twice, but that is nothing compared to the anguish I had gone through the previous summer!

Now I can grill, swim, and simply enjoy the warm weather without insistently swatting at an overabundance of insects. The units lure in the bugs and trap them inside, so when I empty the bag it is clear how many invaders were actually captured before they could make it onto my patio. Now, I’m no longer weary about holding a BBQ and I can look forward to a mosquito free summer!

Spring is in the Air!

BBQ Grill Spring is almost here and with spring comes renewal! Flowers are in bloom, trees are turning green, birds are chirping, bees are building nests under my grill so they can ruin my first BBQ of the season; it’s an enchanting time of year. After a harsh winter, all I want is to spend every waking moment outdoors. I’ll walk the long way home from work; I’ll cook outside, take a nap in the sun, and do just about anything as long as I can fill my lungs with that warm springtime air.

In the winter I tend to eat out often. After a hard days work and a walk home in the cold, I rarely have the energy to cook a decent meal. But in the spring it’s a whole different story. Some of my fondest memories involve returning home after a long day, firing up the grill, and throwing down some hot dogs with my friends. After a few minutes of grilling, I feel like I wasn’t even at work that day. All my cares seem to melt away like American cheese on a perfectly cooked hamburger.

Once the temperature drops, we’ll gather around the fire pit and toast marshmallows. I don’t think I’ve once toasted marshmallows without someone inevitably setting theirs ablaze and wildly swinging their stick in an effort to extinguish their fiery treat. You'll never witness a more hilarious fire hazard.

There is something intrinsically relaxing about watching a flame dance in the night. Also, if there is a more comfortable feeling than sitting in a hooded sweatshirt in front of a night fire, I’d like to know what it is. Nights like those almost make the dreary winter months seem worth it. For if we didn’t suffer through the cold months; we wouldn’t appreciate the warmer seasons nearly as much.

Boon: How To Store Your Kids' Toys

Wouldn’t home-life be extremely simple if kids today could understand the basic philosophies and principles of organization? I mean, shouldn’t it be quite obvious that the more effectively you categorize something, whether it be toys, files, your desk, your closet or anything else that has a tendency to grow a mind of its own, the easier it will be to find and use the means to your end? How many times have you actually taken command of your own home or office desk versus the number of times that it has successfully assumed complete control over you? I think my personal battle currently stands at 50 / 50, but I plan on winning this war.. tomorrow…

Organizational Toy Bag by BoonRegardless of where you stand in the world of organization, it’s never too early to start developing an effective, regular system for your children. It’s highly unlikely that there are many parents out there who hope to willingly walk through the doors of their homes after a day’s worth of typical 9 – 5 tasks, only to pick up right where they’d left off at the office. That being said, infusing a sense of responsibility in children at an early age could theoretically lead to advanced growth & development. Boon produces a variety of children’s products that are meant to simplify the lives of parents while simultaneously exuding qualities of fun, style, and – unknowingly – organization to children.

Recently featured on the “Today Show”, these plush & colorful toy bags from Boon will have your children categorizing their stuffed animals, balls, and toys on their own in no time. Boasting high quality, breathable, machine washable & earth-friendly characteristics, these toy bags offer a practical solution for rounding up clutter. Additionally, they can easily double up as soft seats once they’ve been filled. After all, even kids need a comfortable place to relax after performing their daily chores!

For more tips on organizing kids’ rooms, watch How To Store Kids' Stuff from today's episode of the "Today Show".

Add Unique Decor to Your Home

Wexford Boat Bar Adding a theme to an existing room in your home can add a fun and stylish flare to an otherwise uninspired decor. All over the country, people utilize themed rooms in an effort to add a hint of their own personalities to their homes.

My mother, for instance, was the queen of themed decor. While some people choose to enhance their homes with stylish Japanese inspired themes, beach themes, or forest themes, my mother had a different idea. That idea included birds. She would painstakingly decorate different rooms in our home, each inspired by a different bird.

Our living room in particular was dedicated to one of the most beautiful birds in the world: The swan. The room was adorned with ceramic swans, swan area rugs, swan paintings, even a swan clock. It was an interesting attempt to add a warm element of nature to our home, but I must admit I still have nightmares about it to this day.

While my mother’s ideas may not inspire you to dedicate an entire room in your house to water fowl, it still illustrates the notion that a themed room can definitely evoke certain emotions, if properly executed.
Colonial Blue Rug
In New England especially, nautical themed rooms are as popular as they are inviting. Light houses, wooden ships, and other such nautical paraphernalia truly exemplify the spirit of the sea, which for many evokes tranquility and serenity. Many elements of a nautical theme, such as driftwood and buoys, can be found washed up on the beach. With a little elbow grease, you can transform what some might consider trash, into a beautiful addition to your nautical theme.

In addition to found objects, you can also purchase stunning furniture pieces from a variety of sources. Ocean Home Magazine described the Wexford Boat Bar by Hooker Furniture and the Colonial Blue Lighthouse Rug by KAS as “a unique collection of sea-inspired luxuries we love” in their February edition. Ideas like these are just a few of the many examples of how you can decorate your home to best showcase your own unique sense of style.

Spring Forward With a Howard Miller Wall Clock

Daylight savings is just around the corner. Moving an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening, many believe that observing DST translates to energy conservation. Preserving an hour of daylight in the evening when more people are, arguably, awake theoretically results in a reduction of electricity within homes as well as throughout neighborhoods, as street lights no longer need to be turned on as early as during the fall & the winter.
Daylight Savings Wall Clock by Howard Miller
However, DST is not observed by all U.S territories. Hawaii, Puerto Rico & Arizona refrain from turning their clocks forward. Additionally, countries close to the equator do not benefit from DST as day & night both tend to last for 12 hours. Interestingly enough, while DST does save energy, most people will argue that the added bonus of longer summer evenings is the true benefit – I can’t say that I disagree.

While most eco-friendly activists will support DST, there is a party that expresses sincere opposition toward it. These people find it to be a true inconvenience, a chore, and a disruption to their sleep schedules. In addition to these seemingly irrational factors – less the sleeping transition – many people argue the notion that air conditioners and central air used daily in more tropical climates negate the logistics of DST.

If you’re a part of the party that finds DST a nuisance above all other factors, then consider investing in a daylight savings wall clock. Because there isn’t any convincing evidence suggesting that DST will no longer be observed in the near future, afford yourself the luxury of one less chore to worry about, courtesy of Howard Miller.

Happy Leap Year!

Leap YearLeaping Lizards! Today’s a leap year!

A leap year is needed in our calendar system to keep it in alignment with the earth's revolutions around the sun. 2008 is extra special because it both begins and ends on a Friday. Leap years that both start and end on the same day of the week only repeat every 28 years. This means that the next occurrence won’t be until the year 2036!

Since February 29 comes around once every four years, it’s only fair to dedicate this post to all things ‘leaping!’ Here’s a list of leapers to honor this special day:

1. Celebrity Leaplings: Actor Alex Rocco, Actor Dennis Farina, actor Antonio Sabato, Jr., musician Ja Rule, singer Dinah Shore, Italian opera composer Gioacchino Rossini

2. LeapFrog: Now it’s more than a game you play at recess by jumping over your friend’s backs! LeapFrog is a leading children’s brand of games, puzzles and learning toys to encourage language, math, problem-solving, and social skills in young kids.

LeapFrog
3. Leap Chairs: Not only do Leap chairs have a sleek design, they’re also the first chair that changes shape to mimic and support your spine’s movement! Plus, the Leap Chairs on sale today only for, you guessed it, Leap Year, at CSN Chairs!

4. ‘Leap of Faith’ – Today’s a perfect day to rent the 1992 film comedy film of Faith staring Steve Martin and Debra Winger!

5. Leap Year Cocktail – Concocted on February 29, 1928, this deliciously sweet cocktail was said to have prompted many marriage proposals! Try making it at home this Leap Year!

2 ounces gin
½ ounce Grand Marnier
½ ounce sweet vermouth
¼ ounce fresh lemon juice
Stir, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and serve with a twist of lemon.

It's Not Too Late to Get Organized

Storage Baskets It’s the most wonderful time of the year! That’s right. It’s Tax Season! That magical time of year when everyone decides to put off filing their taxes until the last possible minute. Who wants to spend their free time rummaging through a year's worth of receipts? Sure there’s the promise of a nice tax rebate, but still, spending hours dealing with paperwork isn’t exactly a vacation for most.

Perhaps you wouldn’t mind so much if you were better organized. That would make things a lot easier. If you’ve spent a lot of time and effort meticulously designing your home however, you probably wouldn’t want to mess with the décor by adding a cumbersome filing cabinet. Have you considered an alternative filing method?

Now-a-days, there are a wide range of ways to stay organized, without filling your home with cold metal storage cabinets and files. Consider some different materials. It’s funny how something as simple as a warmer tone can drastically affect the mood of a room. Storage baskets and bins made of wood, straw, or wicker not only give you all the functionality of a filing cabinet, but can also easily be stacked or hung without damaging the aesthetics of a room.

Natural storage solutions like these aren’t just limited to paperwork and documents either. These baskets and bins are also great in the kitchen, bathroom, or play areas and can easily store toys, CDs, towels, and a long list of other household items.

It’s never too late to get yourself organized. Simply having everything in its place is a great way to keep your stress levels manageable, no matter what the time of year.

Bunk Beds: When One Bed Just Isn’t Enough

Bonding, space-saving & just pure fun. Now, you just may be thinking, what do all of these words have in common? Depending upon whom you’re asking, they all describe the versatility, functionality and simplicity of a common children’s bedroom fixture: bunk beds!

Utica Loft Bunk Bed by BergGrowing up, my sister & I shared a room. For a few years, we enjoyed the pleasure of experiencing the end of the day in bunk beds. Unlike Tom Cruise in “Big”, I did not stake the claim of being on the top bunk. Being older & wiser, I realized that I’d receive the benefit of easier mobility, reduce the risk of falling down the ladder when half asleep, and most importantly: slumber in the bigger of the two beds. Initially, I wasn’t partial to the idea of living like this with my younger sister, but the addition of this classic structure actually enabled us to grow closer at a time where siblings traditionally tend to grow apart: my transition from elementary school to middle school.

Bunk beds also offer attractive features and options to parents. Presenting added storage options coupled with the ultimate space saving solution, bunk beds boast a unique range of applications from children’s bedrooms to summer camps.

Offered today in a plethora of types, constructions and sizes, bunk beds have certainly evolved in terms of versatility, style & aesthetics.
