Sprucing up your backyard for summer fun!

Once spring hits and the weather starts to warm up it is time to turn off the TV and head outside. Summer is just around the corner and that means backyard barbecues and outdoor leisure around the home. Here are a few steps to help you spruce up your backyard for summer fun!

Step one:
Before you can truly make the most of your backyard you need a good cleanly base to work from, this means getting rid of what Mother Nature left behind during the winter months. Leaves, fallen branches, and other debris should be raked up and removed from the lawn.

  • For removing matted thatch, wet grass, debris
  • Coil-spring brace for added strength
  • For large capacity leaf raking and general purpose clean up
  • A-Frame design maximizes raking capacity
  • Fiberglass handle is 40% stronger than wood
  • For thatching lawns and raking heavy debris
  • Wide, non-rusting galvanized tines gather even smallest debris

Step two:
Once you have gotten rid of all of the debris from the winter, you may notice that there might be some damage in the form of bald spots on your lawn. You can resolve these issues by putting some grass seed in the areas that got hit hard from the harsh winter.

Dewitt Seed and Plant Guard - $9.41
  • Seed and plant guard
  • Lightweight, .5 oz, White, spunbond fabric for use in grass seeding in commercial and residential sites
  • Creates an excellent microenvironment for seed germination and seeding growth
  • This fabric provides a 90-95% average seed germination compared to 60-65% with straw or hay
  • Used as a low cost insulation against the elements
  • Dimensions: 144" W x 120" D

Step three:
At this point your yard is in great shape for any type of furniture or toys that your family and friends will enjoy all summer. If you have little ones in the family then adding a new swing set or wooden playhouse will keep the kids happy for those long hot summer days. We have a variety of kids wooden playhouses to choose from, ranging in different sizes, styles and price ranges.

Swing Town Mayfield Cottage Playhouse - $499.00
  • Cottage playhouse
  • Made of durable cedar
  • Parque style floor and deck
  • Has a wood floor and deck, surrounded with a picket fence
  • Dog ear picket fence surrounds cottage
  • Wide activity window with shelf and 2 activity buckets
  • Wide second window with 2 stools and play phone
  • Dutch door with accent roof
  • All wood roof with dormer
  • Assembly required
Now that you have the kids occupied, you can focus on other key essentials for your backyard. Adding lawn chairs, patio tables, and a new grill will liven up the space and keep your neighbors begging you to throw another BBQ!

Setting up the perfect outdoor fountain for your garden or backyard!

Step 1 – Choose your type
There are many outdoor fountain types to choose from ranging from animal fountains to transitional outdoor fountains. The first step is to narrow down the search by finding the perfect design that will fit your style and price range.
Brass Baron Double Dolphin Fountain - $278.00
Dimensions: 14"H
Fountain
Verdigris finish
Step 2 – Finding a location for your fountain
The next step is to find a great location for your fountain. Be sure to find a spot that fits the size and is close enough to a water source.

Step 3 – What type of stone or rock should the fountain be made of?
The material you choose will be relative to how long you plan on making the fountain last. Concrete, marble, bronze, resin, granite, and limestone are just some examples of stone outdoor fountains that are great for an outdoor setting. Concrete will run the cheapest of all the options but will run the risk of cracking and or chipping over time especially in freezing and thawing climates. If you are looking to spend a little more to make your fountain last, then granite and bronze are your best options. Typically you will see a correlation between cost and durability of outdoor fountains so think about what is more important to you while picking out the material of your fountain. Wood outdoor fountains offer a cost efficient alternative as well, so be sure to check out all of your options.

    Bond Venice Fountain - $182.18
    Venice fountain
    Constructed of envirostone
    UL tested water pump
    1 10w light
    3 tiers
    No assembly required
    Warranty length: 12 months
    Dimensions: 27.17" H x 14.76" W x 14.76" D

Step 4 – When should I purchase my outdoor fountain?
This may seem like an odd thing to consider however if you live in a location where there are seasons, waiting until the warmer months is best due to installation procedures. For example, if your fountain requires the use of epoxy, it will need time to dry and set to the fountain, making this step hard to tackle in the winter.

      Step 5 – The installation
Depending on the size and weight of the fountain you purchase, hiring a professional for installation might be the best route. If the fountain is small enough for you to handle then installing it on your own is entirely possible. Your fountain should come with an installation manual that will guide you as to how to set up the pump and filter for your fountain. You can be prepared for self installation by making sure you have the following tools handy : hammers, power drills, saws, socket wrenches, crimps, tape measures, levels, shovels, strength (possibly a lift?), and gloves. Additional items as part of the installation may include gravel, stones, or cement to spread around the base of your outdoor fountain.

Henri Studio Four Tier Renaissance Fountain in Toscana Pool - $7,771.50
18 attractive and long lasting finishes
      Constructed of cast stone
Includes one tiered fountain and pump
So there you have it, some simple steps to consider when planning an outdoor fountain set up for your backyard. If you want to make your garden or backyard that much more enjoyable then an outdoor fountain is the way to go. Check out a great selection of outdoor fountains at www.everyfountain.com.

Home Emergency Care, Are You Ready?

Most of us don’t stop to think about what we can do around our house to prepare for an emergency – whatever that disaster may be. Establishing a plan now is much better than later put that knowledge we learned in elementary school to practice.

Off the top of your head there are basic essentials that we know we would require to have stocked just in case such as:
          • Water (at least three gallons per person)
          • Food (at least a three-day supply of nonperishable food with manual can opener)
          • Battery Powered Radio (with backups of course)
          • Flashlight & Lantern (Larger Waterproof LED Flashlight would work best)
          • Batteries
          • First Aid Kit & Medication
The additional supplies to consider that maybe get forgotten in a rush.

          • Key Chain LED: since this will always be on your keys you’ll always have a light source just in case you’re away from home.
          SentrySafe Fire-Safe Waterproof Chest - $63.49
Proven Fire Protection - 1 hr. UL classified
          Waterproof Seal-ETL Verified
          Carrying grips
Tubular key-lock closure, designed and built to resist expert picking and attacking
          1-year limited warranty
          Charcoal grey finish

            • Disposable Butane Lighter: Cheap an more efficient than matches

            • Corded Home Phone: If you have only a cell phone, make sure you have a car cord handy so you can charge it if your power is out.

            Wedding Wednesdays: Let’s Talk Lighting

While food, music, flowers, and centerpieces are probably at the center of your party-planning attention right now, let’s not forget how important lighting will be on your big day! Not only can good traditional or modern lighting keep your afternoon wedding reception going strong into the evening hours, it can really make or break the mood. Whether you want to look stunning in a romantic candlelit ambiance, or party like it’s 1999 on a disco dance floor, we’ve got some tips to make your vision come true!

First things first, ditch the florescent lighting. If you’re getting married at an event center or planning a reception in a church or synagogue, be sure to ask if you can provide your own lighting or if there are other options available (this is usually the case). Nobody looks their best under florescent lights, and keep in mind that the quality of your wedding photos will largely be determined by the quality of your lighting!

If you are using overhead or recessed lighting, see if the lights are set on dimmers. If so, it’s best to keep overhead lighting low and rely on floor lamps or angled directional lights hung from the ceiling. If most of the light is coming straight down from above, this will create shadows on people’s faces and obscure their eyes. By including light from different angles you and your guests will be lit evenly, eliminating shadows.

In terms of color, if you’re able to “gel” your lights to create color washes it’s important to keep certain color theories in mind. Amber lights create the illusion of “natural” light, candlelight, or sunset lighting – perfect for creating a warm glow. Blue lights are much moodier, inspiring a dreamy, romantic illusion. Keep in mind that by choosing blue light you may be dimming the overall brightness of the room (which is generally fine for evening wedding receptions). It’s best to keep to rosy ambers or light blues and to avoid colors like green and orange - no one wants to look seasick or fake tanned!

(Quick Tip: Ask if you can hang a spotlight or aim a directional light onto your wedding cake to really make it pop. Just keep in mind that a white wedding cake is like a blank canvas for colored light, so make sure to leave out the color unless you want your cake to look blue!)

If your wedding or reception is outdoors, this obviously changes your lighting options. For open-air weddings, hang net lights overhead to create the illusion of starlight. If you’re under a tent, you can attach string lights to the tent fabric in a wagon-wheel formation to maximize coverage. Achieve the same lighting moods by purchasing colored string lights – the white tent will absorb and reflect the colored light, making it glow! Many commercial-grade tents also include structural beams from which to hang directional lights or spotlights, but be sure to ask before renting.

Last but not least, let’s not forget those centerpieces! For indoor and outdoor receptions, candles are a great way to add a little extra light and romance to the table. Check out our favorite centerpiece idea – a floating tea light in a personalized glass vase:

Cathys Concepts Personalized Floating Unity Candles - $39.00
            • Personalized floating unity candles
            • Wedding collection

            • Tall glass column is engraved with the Bride and Groom’s first name and the wedding date
            • Interior is filled with water and the included candle is floated on top
            • Free engraving makes this unity candle a cherished memento
            • Elegant design and universal appeal also makes a lovely accessory at a 25th or 50th wedding anniversary
            • White candle measures 3"
From ceiling to floor, your lighting scheme is going to set the mood for your guests and help give your wedding great personality. Do you have some more lighting tips from your own wedding?

Garnishes: Not Your Average Sprig of Parsley

When you hear the word “garnish,” do you imagine that boring piece of parsley that sits uneaten on the side of your plate at the local diner? Well, we’re here say that garnishing is actually the easiest and most creative way to add color, personality, and taste to some of your favorite dishes. Whether you’re serving your meal on beautifully set dining tables, or atop vinyl tablecloths on picnic benches, going those few extra steps to garnish your food can really make the difference between so-so and spectacular.

The first thing you need to do is forget the notion that garnishes are just there to make your food look pretty. Instead, focus on pairing color, texture, and shape to make the garnish a working part of the meal. A garnish can range anywhere from a bit of garden herb sprinkled over roasted chicken to a beautifully carved potato rose atop a bed of steamed vegetables. Here are some easy tips to get you started:

            1. Remember those color wheels from middle school art class? As it so happens, they come in handy when deciding which foods to use as garnishes. Pick contrasting colors to really make your food a feast for the eyes. Pair yellow lemon sherbet with fresh blueberries, bright red tomatoes with green guacamole and orange bell peppers with brown steak. The possibilities for color combinations are endless! Just make sure the two colors are opposite each other on the color wheel.

            2. Texture can refer to both visual texture and also the feeling of the food when you eat it. Avoid including a garnish that is texturally similar to the food you’re serving. For instance, pair crunchy carrot stars with a mashed potato meal, or soft raspberries with a crisp salad. Having contrasting textures, both visual and gustatory, makes food more interesting to eat!

            3. Shapes are a fun way to add personality to a meal. We’ve all seen pictures of beautifully carved carrots, potatoes, and radishes adorning plates in fancy restaurants, but you don’t need to break out a paring knife and chisel to get the same effect. Simply look at your meal; if you notice that the main dish is square-shaped (like pork chops, meatloaf, or tofu), include a circular or oval garnish like rings of sautéed onions. If you want to take it a step further, grab a potato peeler and remove thin layers of carrots, zucchini, or lemon peel, steam or microwave the slivers until they’re flexible, and then arrange them in the shape of hearts, faces, or curling designs!

Last but not least, don’t forget that the plate itself can be the perfect complement to your meal. Square-shaped dinner plates are not only sleek and modern; they can also highlight a round scoop of ice cream. Fun plate designs stimulate the eye and draw attention to the dish. We love the bright, vibrant colors of these Sedona dinner plates!

Certified International Sedona Assorted Dinner Plate (Set of 4) - $33.85
            • Set includes four dinner plates
            • Sedona collection

            • Dishwasher safe
            • Microwave safe for re-heating only
            • Oven to table
Your turn! Have any good ideas for food garnishes? We love potato roses, strawberry fans, and heart-shaped red peppers for anniversaries.

Good Guest Etiquette – Finding the Perfect Hostess Gift!

The season of summer parties, weekend trips and backyard BBQs is upon us. Don’t be that guest who shows up empty-handed whether you’re going to a neighbor’s house or spending the weekend at a friend’s home.

Remember, hostess gifts don’t have to be elaborate or expensive. Big or small, a present for your host will show you appreciate their hospitality and enjoyed seeing them. You can get creative and make a gift basket full of goodies, or pick one item you think they’d enjoy. Here are a few ideas to get you started. If you know you’ll be busy this summer, stock up on several items now so you never have to show up empty handed!
            • A unique set of kitchen towels are always well-received. Pick something seasonal to brighten the room, or find a unique set of tea towels for funkier friends. Pair them with a useful kitchen tool or homemade treats for a more substantial present.
            • If you’re going to a summer party, think of something seasonal. A fun ice cream scoop or set of ice cream bowls are a cool gift idea as are outdoor patio accessories and games.
            • Instead of simply bringing a bottle of wine, pair it with an interesting corkscrew, a set of wine glasses, or wine bottle holder to make your gift unique.

Blomus Cino Wine Bottle Holder - $13.58
            • Stainless steel
            • Ideal fit for standard wine bottle
            • Diameter: 6"

            • Instead of simply bringing flowers, think ahead and find a nice vase to bring them in. This avoids your hostess having to scramble to find one when you arrive and leaves them with a gift they can re-use.
            • While most homes would claim they have enough drinkware, a funky set of mugs that complement the recipient’s personality are a fun and simple gift idea. We love these retro style Taylor & Ng mugs!
            • Visiting friends across the country? Think of something local that they might enjoy but can’t find easily. Perhaps a jar of Vermont maple syrup? Or a box of See’s chocolates from the West Coast!
There you have it; hopefully these ideas will help you next time you’re in a bind for simple, gift ideas before a party, housewarming or trip!

            Creating a Sunflower Themed Room

With spring in full effect and summer quickly approaching, now is the perfect time to give your space a seasonal makeover.  While you certainly don’t have to redecorate every season, picking one room in your home and changing up the décor every so often, really keeps things fresh.  Once you’re fully invested in the idea of a seasonal makeover, the first step is choosing a room to make over.  Once you’ve decided on a room, the next step is choosing a theme. Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s start at the beginning.

            Choosing Your Room

First things first - establish a budget.  Your budget will likely be impacted by whichever room you choose to make over.  If you’re going the frugal route, a kitchen makeover might be best.  Transforming the kitchen is a lot easier (and cheaper) than transforming, let’s say, the bedroom.  Think about it – bedding, pillows, rugs, wall art.  You’re looking at a couple hundred dollars on bedding alone! That’s not frugal at all.  With the kitchen, all you need is a few strategically placed storage containers, utensils or placemats and you’re good to go.

Old Dutch Sunflower Tangerine 4 Piece Kitchen Accessories Set - $49.89
            • 8.25" Trivet
            • Napkin Holder
            • 8" Spoon Rest
            • 16" Paper Towel Holder
            Choosing Your Theme

Now that you’ve picked your room, it’s time to settle on a theme.  When it comes to your theme you don’t want to stray too far from your own design aesthetic.  At the same time, you want to choose something that’s appropriate for whatever season you’re going into.  In this example, the season is spring/summer a floral theme might be a good idea.  Sunflower décor is extremely popular at the moment, which is great, considering all of the sunflower themed goodies we carry!  Sunflower dinnerware for your kitchen table, utility jars for your kitchen utensils – even sunflower kitchen mats for under the sink!

            5,6,7,8 – Let’s Decorate!

Room…check.  Theme…check!  Now for the fun part!  When decorating your space, always be aware of your budget.  It’s easy to get carried away, especially when shopping for kitchen knickknacks.  Think about needs versus wants and go from there.  For instance, if you’ve been waiting for the right time to buy a new tea kettle, a Le Creuset tea kettle in Dijon Yellow would complement your sunflower themed kitchen just perfectly.

Le Creuset 1.5 Quart Halo Tea Kettle in Dijon - $54.95
            • Bold Dijon color
            • Locking handle for easy lifting and pouring
            • Enameled interior won't absorb odors or flavors
            • Phenolic knob, handle, whistle are heat resistant
            • Glazed with hard glossy enamel
            • Works well on all heat sources
Now, just because you’re going floral doesn’t mean that everything you buy has to be sprinkled with big yellow flowers.  Choosing a complementary color palette for your space is a great idea.  Yellow and orange kitchen towels, for instance would look great in your sunflower themed kitchen!  Remember, all that you really need to transform your space are a few strategically placed kitchen accessories.  While sunflower wallpaper and drapes might seem like a good idea in the moment, are you really going to want to take it all down and start from scratch come fall or winter?  Happy Spring!

Space Saving Ideas for Your Kid’s Room!

A small bedroom can be a challenging design dilemma but don’t let limited floor space doom the room. Make the most of your kid’s small bedroom with these space-saving tricks that will help organize the room, clear out the clutter and help them enjoy the space to its fullest potential!
            • Putting their bed up high frees up the space underneath for a built-in work space or play area.
            • As an added bonus, many have built in storage features and shelves to store toys, trophies, school work, and more.
            • We have a great selection of metal and wooden loft beds as well as contemporary and traditional styles for all ages so you can find the perfect bed for toddlers or teens.
            • If a new bed isn’t in your budget, put their existing one on risers and invest in several clear under-the-bed storage containers so you can keep seasonal clothes and toys out of sight, but still accessible.
Wildon Home Dorena Twin Workstation Bunk Bed in Cappuccino - $569.00
            • Dorena Twin Workstation Bunk Bed
            • Casual style
            • Cappuccino finish
            • Dimensions: 74" H x 41.75" W x 80" D
            Use your closet wisely!

Most kids’ rooms don’t have extensive closet space but put what storage space you do have to good use.
            • Install lots of shelving so you can maximize the space. Clothes can be sorted by shelves and rotated around based on the season.
            • Don’t forget about places to store toys, sporting equipment and seasonal accessories as well. Hanging closet organizers are perfect for smaller items.
            • Invest in an over-the-door shoe rack to keep all of their shoes in one location. Plus, extra spaces can be used to store jewelry, playing cards, games, and more.
If there is no closet in the room, browse our contemporary bedroom storage section for an armoire or wardrobe to provide upright storage space without overpowering the room.

Redmon The Original Bongo Bag Round Hanging Closet Organizer in Red - $14.99
            • Round hanging closet organizer in red
            • The Original Bongo Bag collection
            • Color: Red
            • Hangs neatly from closet rod
            • Provides six separate compartments for storage
            • Use in any closet, garage, or pantry
            • Folds flat when not in use
Even the smallest rooms have four walls…use them!

If floor space is limited, don’t forget about functional wall space.
            • Wall mounted bookshelves are perfect for freeing up floors for dressers, chairs and desks. Put a bookshelf on the wall above their bed or desk to let them reach their favorite books with ease.
            • If they have a television, look at our TV wall mounts. Not only will this clear up table top space, it will also give you more freedom with where you position the TV in the room.
            • Opt for interesting ceiling and wall lights instead of floor and table lamps. Wall sconces are perfect for near the doorway as well as in lieu of bedside lamps.
            • Be choosy with wall décor. Cluttering the walls will instantly shrink the space. Choose a light wall color and accent it with a few key pieces of wall art to complete the bedroom’s theme without overpowering the space.

Let these ideas kick start your creativity. It can be as simple as clearing out unwanted toys and clothes to larger steps like buying better furniture for the space you have. There are plenty of creative ways to make the most out of a small space. Do some research and take a few of the steps above to maximize the space your child has to play, sleep and enjoy his or her room.

Are you using any space saving techniques that you can share with us?

How to Polish your Sterling Silver

Thanksgiving was nearly six months ago, and if you haven’t taken a peek at your sterling silver dinnerware sets since you packed them away, chances are you may not like what you find! It’s important to keep an eye on your good silverware to avoid tarnishing; luckily, proper upkeep is relatively quick and painless.

If your silverware appears yellowish or dull, this means it’s merely in need of a good cleaning. However, if it’s been a long time since you last cleaned or used the silver, and it appears dark brown or even black, this is a sign of severe tarnishing. For precious silverware that is severely tarnished or too difficult to clean on your own, take these pieces to have them professionally cleaned and restored.

For sterling silver that is only mildly tarnished, feel free to clean at home! All you’ll need is some silver polish or silver dip, a soft cotton cloth and some elbow grease. We recommend polish cream for flatware that is free of hard-to-clean, intricate designs. (In the case of elaborately carved handles, a silver dip can be used.)

Here are the step-by-step directions to help you get started!

First things first, lay down some paper towels or a cotton dish towel next to the sink. Most silver polish comes with its own foam sponge; however a soft cotton towel can also be used in a pinch.

            1. Rinse your silverware in warm water to remove any dust. Then, while the piece is still warm, take the silver cream and coat the entire piece. Once it has been covered, go back in and rub areas of tarnish to clean and polish. No need to spend too much time on each piece – a good 30 seconds is plenty of time!

            2. Gently wash off the remaining cream and set down to let dry.

Never let sterling silver soak in the sink, and do not wash it in the dishwasher! We’ve also heard some rumors around the web that toothpaste works as a cleaner, but this may actually prove too abrasive for the silver and wear it down over time.

Once your silverware has been cleaned and polished, it’s important to store it correctly to prevent future tarnishing. The best possible storage for sterling silver is in a specially constructed flatware chest that holds the silverware in place to avoid scratching, and is lined with tarnish-resistant cloth. However, if you’re looking for a simpler method, check out this sterling silver drawer insert that fits right into any kitchen drawer:

Reed & Barton Drawer Liner Pad Brown Silverware Cloth - $34.95
            • Brown silver cloth drawer liner pad
            • Liner constructed with tarnish preventive silver cloth
            • Perfect for keeping silver flatware safe
            • Color: Brown
As a last resort, you can store silverware in airtight containers like Tupperware, which slows the tarnishing process; however the silverware will be prone to scratching if it’s floating freely in the container.

Ironically, the best method for keeping sterling silver clean and untarnished is using it frequently! Just be sure to hand wash immediately after use and you’ll be surprised how long it stays shiny. Why wait to break it out only once a year? Beautiful silverware is meant to be enjoyed!

Do you have sterling silver that’s been passed down through the generations? What’s its story?

8 Steps to Spring Cleaning Your Refrigerator!

Remember those canned artichokes you bought to make homemade pizza last October? Or how about that bottle of sweetened lime juice to make Bloody Marys for Christmas brunch? If you dread cleaning out your fridge (and the expired things you’ll find haunting the back shelves) we’ve got some quick tips on how to sanitize and reorganize so that your refrigerator stays clean for the rest of the year!

            1. Bite the bullet. Grab a trash bag and begin going through your fridge checking expiration dates. If you come across something that you don’t think you’ll use again (like those canned artichokes), go ahead and toss it.

            2. Once most of the food has been removed, either permanently or temporarily, grab some rubber gloves and an all-purpose cleaner and give the inside of your fridge a good once-over. If you’ve been thinking about rearranging the shelves to better fit tall soda bottles or large dinner plates, now is definitely the time to make the change!

            3. Now that you have a clean slate, let’s talk a little bit about fridge organization. Did you know that the door of your fridge is significantly warmer than the rest of the inside? This makes it a good place to store condiments or other foods that contain higher levels of preservatives. Don’t keep milk, veggies, meats, or any other perishable foods in the door compartments (this includes eggs!).

            4. The coldest part of your fridge is on the lowest shelf, near the back. Any highly perishable foods should find their home here to maximize shelf life. If you’re worried about storing food securely on a flat shelf, grab some food storage baskets or one of these affordable storage trays to help keep fruits or veggies from rolling around:

Sterilite Slim Storage Tray in White $4.89
            • Storage tray
            • White color
            • Perfect for organizing your home
            5. It’s a great idea to dedicate one shelf, or part of a shelf, strictly to leftovers. If you have a tendency to put last night’s dinner in a container and toss it on the back shelf, odds are you forget about it pretty quickly. If you invest in glass food storage containers, you can take a dry erase marker and write the date the food was made on the side! When all of the leftovers are located prominently on one shelf, you’re more likely to grab them for a quick meal.

            6. Dedicate the front part of the top shelf to healthy snacks. This is the most visible part of the fridge and easily within reach for you or your family members (so you won’t be tempted to just grab that leftover pizza). Who knew that rearranging your fridge could make you healthier?

            7. Group similar items on the shelves to make life a little easier. You can create special areas for dairy, canned goods, or sandwich supplies! If you enjoy cooking with fresh herbs, you can group them together in these great herb savers by Prepara:

Prepara Mini Herb Savor Pickups (Set of 3) $29.85
            • Set of 3 mini herb savor
            • Comes in a convenient 3-pack to refrigerate a variety of herbs at once
            • Keeps herbs fresh for up to 3 weeks
            • Fits neatly into refrigerator door
            • Herb stems sit slightly submerged in the water of the water-well, keeping them fresh
            • Asparagus also keeps extremely well with ends submerged
            • Easily disassembles for easy use and cleaning
            • Overall dimensions: 10" H x 3.25" W
            8. Last but not least, refrigerator temperature is often something we take for granted, or at least check rarely. The FDA recommends keeping your refrigerator under 40° F (O° F for the freezer), in order to store food safely and reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses. We recommend checking out the FDA’s article Are You Storing Food Safely? to read further recommendations.

And there you have it! 8 easy steps for cleaning out your refrigerator and keeping food organized. Now it’s your turn: Do you have any cleaning tips or organization tricks that you use in your home? We’d love to hear your feedback!
